Today,Internet is penetrating deeper into the society. Its reach is increasing day by day with smart phones getting cheaper and variety of Internet pack options given by the telecom companies. With this, the reach of social media sites especially Facebook is also rising. Now a days we can find even youths of 7 to 8 years of age are also on Facebook. So using it as a marketing tool is indeed effective as one can reach the maximum masses possible. Also marketing in such social media sites is quiet cheaper. Furthermore the options of "likes" and "shares" increases the visibility of an advertisement in an exponential rate. It serves as a tool which can help one to get the maximum reach in the shortest possible time.
Think of some adds which goes viral within few seconds in Facebook, is it possible by using any other marketing tool?
How does Flipkart and other e-commerce sites promote themselves? It's primarily social media especially Facebook.
For any B2B marketing Linkedin also turns out to be very handy.

According to me facebook, linked-in and twitter are playing major role in bringing the customers to the company.
Many of the companies advertising their company products on facebook, twitter etc.,. in a very effective way
to grab the customers.
Even these social media helps the companies to advertise about their new offers to the customer in a rapid speed
and customers are happy because they can go through the product or service anytime and also they can read the terms and
conditions. They can check the product in their comfortable price range and order the product without any hardwork.
So these social media sites are marketing effective in indian context.

Yes ! It is very good strategy to promote your business on Social Networking sites .. but it does not works for every business (like it may not work for Hospitals, or to promote highly technical products for ex- to promote a company which sells ERP solutions)
rather it works a lot for youth oriented merchandise company to expand their business ..as youth spend lot of time on these sites and we can see now days, companies like Fast-track, Woodland , Burberry , Franco-leone are spending handsome amount on promotion through social networking sites and this has been from very long .. Along with this , we see there are Educational Institutes advertising on social networking sites and for them this has proved to be successful in India ..
as we see that there before taking admission in XYZ University , the students used to view FB page to get a glimpse about the institute ..
so i would say this is a good strategy but the product advertised should be youth/fashion oriented ..
