The main difference between search engine optimization and pay per click is that traffic coming from SEO is free, but traffic generated from Pay per click is not free (We have to pay per click). This is one of the reasons why you sometimes see the terms organic search engine and paid search engine or paid search advertising (PSA).
More over both Search engine optimization and Pay per click are part of Search engine marketing (SEM). These are very useful and best tools, we can use as part of our overall internet marketing.
Search engine optimization: - We can get first page position if our web site is optimizes for search engines
Pay per click:- We can get our ad on the first page by paying a higher cost per click. Th.is is called cost per click

Search Engine optimisation (SEO) is different from Pay Per Click (PPC). Search engine optimisation is a tactic used to increased the number of visitors to a particular web page by obtaining a high ranking placement in the search results. The SEO considers which search engine the target customers use, what do the target customers search for, keywords etc and edit or customize the HTML codes so that the web page gets a higher ranking while search engine indexing activity takes place. This is a non paid activity.

Pay Per Click (PPC) on the other hand is used in internet advertising to direct traffic to the advertiser's website. Here the advertiser pays the website owner based on the number of clicks made by the prospective customers. The ads are given on websites mostly in the form of banners.

For e-commerce companies, both internet advertising and Search engine optimisation can be useful marketing strategies.

Both PPC & SEO are completely different, the traffic which comes from SEO is free while the traffic which comes from PPC is paid.As the word implies PPC is Pay Per Click that means in this you have to pay for every single click.

PPC is not a part of SEO, infact both of them are considered to be a part of SEM i.e.Search Engine Marketing, a tool which can be used as a part of all Internet Marketing campaign.

I know this might be a little elementary, but what is the main difference between SEO and PPC? Do you consider PPC to be part of SEO?
