Marketing is the process of planning, collecting, and analyzing data relevant to a marketing decision. The results of this analysis are then communicated to management. Thus, marketing research is the function that links the consumer, customer, and public to the marketer through information. Marketing research plays a key role in the marketing system. It provides decision makers with data on the effectiveness of the current marketing mix and insights for necessary changes. Furthermore, marketing research is a main data source for both management information system and DSS. In other words, the findings of a marketing research project becomes data in a DSS.
Marketing research has three roles in particular descriptive, diagnostic, and predictive. Its descriptive role presents factual data. Diagnostic role includes explaining the data and the predictive function answers to the ‘what if’ data. Virtually all firms that have adopted the marketing concept engage in some marketing research because it offers decision makers many benefits.

The system may be used as an ongoing monitor of the marketplace or on a case-by-case evaluation of a potential product concept
It is the systematic gathering, recording, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data about issues relating to marketing products and services. The goal of marketing research is to identify and assess how changing elements of the marketing mix impacts customer behavior. The term is commonly interchanged with market research; however, expert practitioners may wish to draw a distinction, in that market research is concerned specifically with markets, while marketing research is concerned specifically about marketing processes.
