Rural marketing is the essence of the marketing theme. Every zone has a portion of population that are untouched because of faraway locations or no connectivity with urban technology. There are many ways to create a buzz around these population and eventually generating the expected results.

Rural per capita consumption expenditure grew more then the urban expenditure. Now days there are tremendous demands of two-wheelers, small cars, washing machines, and home computers etc in rural areas.The rural market in Indian economy generates almost more than half of the country’s income.

Rural Marketing is similar to the Marketing in Urban area. But here buyers need can be different due to location and budget. But the target market consists of customers who living in rural areas. It is a process of developing, Product, pricing, promoting, and distributing rural specific goods and services to satisfy their needs and wants. Marketing process remains same , so it can be defined as: When marketing activities are undertaken for rural segments is called a Rural Marketing .

It is often said that the secret to success lies within. In an economy like India, nothing can justify this statement better than the golden and glittering opportunities hidden in the rural areas of the country for businesses. A sure shot way of tapping this high potential business zone is through Rural Marketing.

Rural marketing involves addressing over 700 million potential consumers. This untapped market, being the bottom of pyramid which depicts 43% of India’s National Income surely has a has huge potential and larger consumption base but the flip side of it acquaints us to some surreal terms to the urban abode such as : underdeveloped markets, inadequate media coverage, irregular income etc. Even after knowing the path, we might not reach the destination. Similarly, to exploit a market effectively, knowing “what” is not enough. We should be aware of what, how and when. Rural marketing analytics can impel it in right direction and with right thrust. It can enhance the effectiveness of existing strategies and create some ground breaking marketing plans.

Rural marketing works in two directions- Downstream where goods and services flow from urban areas to cater to the rural markets; and upstream where goods manufactured in rural areas are sold in the urban markets. Thus, the rural areas act as a source of and market for goods and services with rural marketing being the medium facilitating this exchange.
