In Sales first action should be to understand what customer wants..if you have matching product show him value first and if you are convinced it can give him benefit explain product features.
On the other hand if you do not have product matching his requirement or which can give him benefit, explain him true picture..in this way you will build a relation SALES will follow sooner or later.

Its said that first impression is the last impression...
So i believe that the first action goes a long way in deciding whether the sales will be a YES or a NO..
