Indian Met Department has predicted that monsoon will be lower than the average and El Nino is being considered the major cause for the same. Our government should put arrangement in place to meet this challenge. This deficient rain may impact the Khariff crops and we may face the problem of food inflation which can be a worrisome factor for RBI and the government.

This deficient rain can impact the economy at large so government needs to be very cautious.

IMD expects rainfall to be below normal.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects India to face a second consecutive year of below normal monsoon. Below normal monsoon is defined as the rain being between 90%to 96% of the Long Period Average (LPA). LPA is the average of the rainfalls from the year 1951 to the year 2000. In the year 2014 the rainfall was 12 % below normal, and again in the year 2015, the rainfall is expected to be 7% below average.

At the press conference organized to announce IMD's prediction, the science minister Mr.Harsh Vardhan told the reporters that this year monsoon rainfall is likely to be 93% of the LPA. The primary reason for this prediction is the high probability of the whether phenomenon known as El-Nino, in which warming of waters of Pacific ocean brings about changes in the rainfall patters across the world. Mr. D.S. Pai, who heads the Long Range Forecast division (LRF) of IMD said that this year there is a 70% probability of the occurrence of El-Nino .
