Span of control is the number of subordinates managed by the superiors in an particular hierarchy or organisation. Basically, it means the number of subordinates reporting to their superiors. How, a superior handles the number and quality of its subordinates is span of control. He has the power to control his subordinates. That is basically the span of control. According to me, a limited number of subordinates should report to the manager, as many people can cause disturbance and low quality of work. When there are less number of people the manager can concentrate more his subordinates and also can give personal attention to all of them. Moreover, a subordinate should report to only one manager and not more than one manager. This might create a lot of confusion and also duplication of work. The manager should effectively use his span of control to shape his subordinates which will in future play an important role in the organisation.

Span of control basically means the number of employees that the superior can handle within him effectively and efficiently. This helps in deciding the number of subordinates working within the superior and reporting to them. As if more number of subordinates are working within an individual then it would lead to chaos and inefficiency of work. If few are working within the head of one individual it helps in removing the confusions and chaos and work towards the goals and objectives effectively and efficiently. Every organisation should decide upon the Span of Control within in the orgainsation. This helps in enhancing the working efficiency.

Span of Control in management and administration refers to the total number of people (here, subordinates or employees working under) whom a manager or an administrator can effectively control and supervise.
So, span of control means the number of subordinates whom a superior (manager or administrator) can effectively supervise. Every superior can supervise a limited number of subordinates (employees). Therefore, every superior should be assigned or given an authority to handle only few subordinates.
Span of Control is also referred by many other names. It is often known as 'Span of Supervision' or 'Span of Management' or 'Span of Attention'. However, the term 'Span of Management' suits as the most appropriate name, since control and supervision are the elements of management.
