Marketing & sales are interlinked terms and the ultimate goal of both the activities is to generate revenue for the firm.Marketing is a broader term then sales it includes all the actives from making a product or service to its final destination i.e. reaching to end customer ,so we can say that marketing involves all the pre & post sales activities.where as sales is a part of marketing process ,where you do everything that you do to close the sales and get a signed agreement or contract.Marketing includes identifying the needs the customer, development of the product acc. to need of the customer & creating awareness for the same .Marketing means generating leads or prospects. sales means converting the leads or prospects into purchases and orders.Marketing involves a process to build a brand name for the product which is a long term goal ,Where as sales only involve a short term goal of finding the target consumer. Advertising , brand marketing, public relations, direct mails etc are the various parts or methods of marketing ,however Sales are really interpersonal interactions. Sales involve one-on-one meetings, networking and calls.

Marketing and sales both are the important activities for every organization. Marketing is a broader term than sales. It consists public relations, branding, advertising, sales etc. Hence sales is the one part or activity of the marketing. Marketing is not related with the closing the sale. When you interacting with the customer and closing the sale then it is called sales.

Marketing includes :
a) Research (identifying needs of the customer)
b) development of products
c) promoting the product through advertisements and create awareness about the product among the consumers.
d) Generate leads.

Sales:
Once the product is out in the market, than the sales person role comes into play i.e. to convince the customer to buy the product or converting the leads/ prospects into purchases.

Actually both marketing and sales are important activities for any organisation. However if compared one on one, the differences are as follows.

1.Marketing refers to creating the demand in the market while sales is about fulfilling that demand.

2. Marketing is a broader term than sales. It consists identifying customers, public relations, branding, advertising, sales etc. while sales is a part of marketing.

3.Marketing creates a brand image of the product or service while sales is only related with selling the product or service.

4.Both the activities are interrelated at the some point of the time. When a person is doing marketing then he is doing sales on a large scale while when a person selling then at the same time he is doing marketing.

5.There is one more important difference between marketing and sales and that is the focus. Marketing focuses on long term concerns while sales is related with short term focus.

6.Marketing is related with educating and creating awareness of the product or service in the market. Sales is also related with educating and creating awareness but the difference is scale. Marketing does these activities on a huge scale while sales does these activities on very short scale and most of the times one on one basis. Sales is more related with interpersonal and interaction with prospects.
