Sales happen when a combination of factors take place like customer need, right product, ability to pay etc. We can not negate any of the factor but by working smartly you can negate the secondary factors like customer wanted to buy a product after two month but you acted in a way that he purchased it earlier. So to a certain limit smartness can work. In sales you should have both these qualities: working hard & working smartly.

When we talk of hard-work, we assume that it means dedicating yourself to a cause completely for all your waking hours, however the commitment which a sales job or any other job requires pertains to utilizing your time efficiently. In sales you have your target, and to reach that target you have to make a certain level of effort, if you don't utilize your time efficiently to achieve your target then then you'll struggle to meet the target and will have to do hard work to achieve your objective, however if you know how to manage your time well, then you can achieve the same objective with smart-work.

Working smart however does not mean that you shouldn't give your 100 %. Smart-work just means that your concentrated efforts will get you better results.

Sales is all about working smartly. Smartness and Hard work in a business go hand in hand. You need new ideas, smart ideas to excel in any sort of business. That combined with hard work will give you a masterpiece. Talk about any big inventions, discoveries, companies etc, all are a result of hard work and smartness.

In sales, you should be smart enough to understand what your customer needs and work your way through it. You can think big, but if you don’t have the willingness to work hard it will lead you nowhere.

Therefore, work hard and work smart to get success.

Its all about the balance between working smart and working hard. For achieving any target one definitely needs to work hard but at the same time if the direction is wrong then no use of working hard as we wont be able to achieve. So smart work is also definitely needed to succeed. So hard work done smartly will always be fruitful.

Sales is the combinations of both hard and smart work...Because in both the cases results are rewarded..Just doing hard work won't generate closure because you need to be smart enough to handle each query of that upcoming closure...Sometimes you need to mould the prospect requirement to show him value for the money by your smartness and after providing solution, need to take regular follow up to close the deal and convert him from prospect to client by hard working.

Work hard with smart to become superstar.

Sales is an activity that requires one's smartness, if an individual take the approach of hard work towards sales he will be successful in his approach but not in the same intensity in which a smart sales worker will be. Sales is entirely dependent on your smartness. It is like using your right tool at the right point in time, it is like how to convert a negative leading sales to a positive closing sales using your smartness. If an individual is hard worker he may neutral to rejections whereas if an individual is a smart worker second consecutive rejection will start bothering him as he is not used to taking rejection it is when his smartness comes into play and he convert the rejections into positive sales. So sales is all about smart worker and not hard worker.

Hard working in sales is required to bring in new customers. Smart work is needed to retain the customers who are brought in.Hard work is needed periodically in sales whereas smart work is required when you are going for any transition from regular methodologies or techniques and also needed at the time of crucial decision making. So according to me, working hard and being smart can make a rock star in sales.

Mr.X : I think job in sales is a very tiresome. We need to fetch only our numbers and meet the target points!! It’s only about hard work.!!
Mr.Y : I think you are being silly. Sales let you interact with different types of people and make your lifestyle very dynamic. It is very challenging indeed but high performance gives you high reward. If you are working smart then you can excel in your sales work.!!

These are some typical conversation in any B-School amongst the students contemplating a career in sales. Many think that it is much about traveling and meeting the clients for the sale of products. For others, it’s an opportunity for networking which is considered to be very necessary in competition. Their main concerns boils down to a single question: Is it about working hard or smart?
I think it’s a combination of both. The competition today is so stiff that only hard work won’t help us in the future race. In order to prove our performance to the management, we should be able to convey it to through the targets. In the verge of fulfilling our target numbers we would also not forget that maintaining relationship with the client is also very important. In general one client gives the reference of another one and hence the networking is built. So it can be implied that sales is not about working hard or smart but a combination of both.
