Is sales an art or science

Sales , I personally believe is a combination of both the science and art. It is science because one needs to understand the technical aspects of a product to a great extent before selling it to any customer. However again it is not just about understanding the technical aspects because the technical aspects taught are same to all , but it is the way how you sell the product distinguishes from your another sales colleague.
Sales is an art because it teaches us the beauty of language the grace of expressions and most important of all right attitude and humbleness.
Sales cannot be done without the combination of above three however one needs to know science or the technical aspects of the product too especially when we are dealing with the products like cars , phones etc. during such an occasion sales man needs to know all the technical ares of the product to answer all the queries of the customers & at the same time he should also know the art of opening and closing the sales in a great manner.
Hence to conclude with it is important for any sales professionals to strike a fine balance between the science and an art of nay product or services.

It was viewed as a form of art a few decades ago, but with advent of Big Data and Analytics, marketers can now draw a complete picture of who their customers are, this helps them in reaching the right people, in a timely and effective manner. Overtime sales has evolved from being an art to being a combination of both. Sales is not just about convincing the customer to buy a product anymore, its about analyzing the vast amount of information to draw inferences about customer base, identifying and reaching the customers, comparing your performance with that of your competitors and constantly evolving your processes.

i am in favor that sales is totally an ART ...anything can be selled if you have an art of making customers fool or any how you can do sales by agreeing cutomers that this product is use of yours ...!!!

A lot of people will say that sales is mainly learned on the job. And it is true, there is a finesse about it that simply cannot be taught in the classroom. There is an Art to it.
And yet there are thousands of companies who are anxious to train your sales employees in their method. In sales, there has to be some kind of repeatable process. There is a SCIENCE to it. A sales conversation is an art form that requires a skill, poise and… vision!! But....Professional sales is a science that is based on research in order to produce more consistent results for future sales.

Sales the basic necessity to survive any business (now a days), includes both art and science. Sales include typically two parties a buyer and a seller, while both are humen. So, Human behavior/interpersonal skills and appearance are the basic art of any salesman, by which he can influence his prospect to convert into potential buyer. Though, sales has played vital role to any business for centuries, but in current scenario, technology works as a catalyst to deeply/fastly understand the insights of their consumer requirements and communication, by quantifying present and estimating the sales forecast to increase business.

Sales is definitely an art rather than science. Science defines definite answers but in sales there's no definite answers as there's lots of factors involved like negotiations, bargains, discounts, etc. Sales is all about consumers behavior and depends on needs, demands, supply of the consumers. But Its also a science.

Sales is both science as well as art...Art because you need to put your tricks,tactics,creativity,analyses to handle different type of person having different requirement.
Science because you need to put your tactics with principals and ethics so that whatever be the result come that should be with better outcome.

According to me sales is both art and science. Many people say that sales is science because it involves the mental calculation for doing sales. But for me, I believe that sales is both. It is science because it involves the methodology for doing the sales. there is defined process in which you carry out sales. However, there might be but changes in the steps of process but the entire process will not change. It is an art because doing sales is not everyone's plus point. You need to have those skills which makes you best salesperson. IT is an art which all people don't have. However, if practiced can be learnt. The skills and art of doing sales can be learnt. Therefore, sales is a combination of both art and science.

Both.. sales is an art and science. it is science because we should follow some principles to reach customers or to target customers, and its a cyclic process to reach customer. its also art because after reaching or targeting the customer, sales person should attract the customer, for that we should use some tactics. so sales is mixture of both art and science.

Even I agree with this that sales is combination of both art and science. But according to my opinion art has major role in the sales because by using formulae we can just decide the at what range of area or at what target of customers the salesperson has to concentrate.
But the most difficult thing to talk to the customer understand the his/her requirement according to customer changing the way of selling the product and making them to buy the product its really a difficult talk.
If science helps the organization 30% to reach its customer then the remaining 70% its depend upon the sales person's art how he attract and make the customer to buy the product or service.
sales person are the direct persons from the organization who also helps in maintaining CRM of the organization.
