promotion should be done without degrading the competition because your product/service in one or another why will be a bit on a lower side in comparison with your competitors product/service. And from here it starts promotions which doesn't promote their products but degrades its competitors.
And due to this it leads to the customers to analyse the best among two & make the decision.
One should just concentrate on promoting the product/service & make the customers feel unique & special. (like the iPhone does)
This has helped them yo build such huge followers & in due course they have not attacked directly or indirectly their competitors.

Today is a very competitive world, every company has the competitors , and it is obvious that every one wants to sustain in the market or win the competition. Now to win the competition first thing companies adapt is promotion/ advertisement of their brands, if it doesn't work they left with one option i.e. degrading competition..

I would say instead of promoting brands by degrading competition, companies should always try to increase their product quality and service and promote their brands by telling people about their product advantages and benefits.. I strongly believe customers deal with the companies not because how better they are from their competitors, they deal because of their trust and believe in that company which makes them comfortable buying product & services...

Yes ! I agree today's world is really competitive & promoting your brand without degrading competitor has become a question ..

But Yes its not impossible too , we can do this in following ways ..

1) One should show competitive analysis to its customer .. For eg : when we go to buy automobile of one company they show competitive analysis of their automobile with other automobiles (which falls in same range of price and feature). In this way , they do not degrade other automobile brand but promote their brand ..
2) Companies should do promotional activities, i.e. spend money on Public relation, because in today's competitive world its not the time to satisfy your customer but its the time to delight your customer and if you succeed in delighting your customer with your product and services, your work of promotion has been done and you also have not degraded competition ..
3) Organize events and customers get-together sessions and other interactive sessions with your customers in this way you make customer comfortable in communicating with you and you get to know their exact requirement and then you have chance to delight them with our services in this way, you have not degraded competition brand but promoted your brand ..

Promoting a brand without degrading the competition is very important for a good company, or a good brand.. customer observes everything, and it hampers the brand value of a good company if they are justifying their quality by degrading others..

Some of the tips that can be helpful are ::

Create a unique and recognizable company and brand name.

If you notice blog posts or independent websites complaining about your brand, deal with the source directly. See if relations can be repaired with the customer and at least try to learn from their perspective and not make the same mistakes in the future.

Use of social sites can also be helpful, try to connect maximum number of people.

When you have tough competition in market it becomes difficult differentiate your product or show customer absolute unique value he will derive by using your product or service. At some point of time Product, Service and Price become homogeneous the only way to promote your brand without degrading competition is to build confidence in your customer that he is dealing with a right guy who will give him right advice and will help him in any situation.

Some time back Pepsi and Coke use to degrade each other in advertisements..but this strategy didn't work for longer period. Even they have realized to capture market they should build strong relation ship with clients.

If you are talking to senior level people in organisation they expect you to give logical reasons to prefer your Brand and would not want you to get engaged in CAT Fight by degrading competition.

Therefore to win over competition in compititive world you should have following traits:
>Ability to build relationship and gain customer trust
>Complete knowledge about your product and wisdom to play battle cards to win over competition
