Email Marketing is directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It usually involves using email to send ads, request business, or solicit sales or donations, and is meant to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness. Email marketing can be done to either sold lists or current customer database. Broadly, the term is usually used to refer to:

1. Sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing the relationship of a merchant with its current or previous customers, to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business.

2. Sending email messages with the purpose of acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately.

3. Adding advertisements to email messages sent by other companies to their customers.

Well In Opt-In, Email addresses on a (single) opt-in list are not confirmed... It means that anybody can submit anybody's address to the list and it will be there until it is unsubscribed. But if we are talking about Double Opt-In, all email address must be confirmed before they are added. A request for confirmation is sent to the submitted address and the address owner must take some action to confirm , if it get confirmed then its clear that He/she is the owner of the email address and indeed wants to subscribe. :|

An email list becomes double opt-in when any person who subscribes must confirm the request twice. It's like any email based newsletter or e-course where people can sign-up through the Internet either on a webpage or sending an email to mailing list management software.

For an effective e-mail strategy, we should try to follow "double opt-in" method instead of "opt-in"... it is difficult to follow but if it works then there are more chances to have better than expected results.. ;)
