Advertising and public relations are both different terms. However, people don't know the difference between them as they are considered one and the same. Public relations is when you take steps and give media exposure to the products and services of the organisation. Here the people try to understand what the organisation is all about and what are the different services offered. Public relations exposure is basically through print media, ads in newspapers, press releases etc. Advertising is one of the ways of means of communication. It helps people to know that yes there is such kind of product existing in the market. Advertising is through direct mails, hoardings, free samples etc. Advertising should be used by the start-ups where as public relations by the well established companies. For start-ups it is very necessary to promote their product and help gain notice from the public. for well established companies, their products are established in the markets. They just have to promote more and more to survive and win the rat race.

Firstly let us understand both the terms, Advertising is a form of communication meant to make audience there customers by attracting them to purchase products or services they are offering.
PR(Public relation) is form of communication made to generate a positive image of a company in the market. The PR professionals work to build long term relation between public and the company.
The main objectives of advertising are sales promotion, direct marketing event marketing, media advertising etc, where objectives of PR are maintaining a reputation of the company in the market, stable customers, and maintaining a long term relationship with the public.
Where advertising is making customers believe in company's product, PR is making customers believe in the company.

Advertising: Advertising is a paid form of non-personal presentation of goods or services by an identified sponsor to reach out maximum number of audiences. Individual and business firms promotes their goods, services, ideas, etc.through advertisement. Advertising messages can be conveyed to target audience through a wide range of media.
Advertising helps organization create an awareness of their product or services or about organization itself, among the target audience.
for example : manufacturers use advertising to reach the individual customers for attaining the sales of a product,brand or a services.
Government of India spends large sum of money to bring about a change in peoples attitudes and values regarding the girl child, AIDS, primary education etc

Public Relation : The planned and sustained efforts to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organization and its public. An organization needs to communicate with public both internally as well as externally . As the attitude of public influences the sales of an organization .Firms can use a number of PR tools to communicate with public and create a positive image for themselves in the society

Advertising is a way which persuades people to buy any product/services by creating awareness and highlighting the benefits of the product. Public Relation (PR) keeps close to the customer to satisfy needs and anticipate changes in customer demand to create a favourable impression among the people which advertising may sometimes not do.

Yes I agree that every company has a budget to advertise and the most difficult thing to analyze is where the money is to be spent , along with this I would say it is one of the toughest decision for Marketing Managers that where should they invest to get maximum returns ..

For say- they should spend on Direct advertising or on PR activities ..

For the same , I would like to say that , companies should analyse , by which means of communication will they reach their target audience ..

Also I would say companies should make their STP and should look, by which advertising means they will increase their visibility ..

Along with this decision makers in company should make blue-print that by which means of communication, will feed them maximum returns and then companies should spend accordingly ..

According to me it depends upon the level of company.If a company is big enough and they already have a huge amount to spend on marketing activities so in that case they can go for both PR activities & direct marketing because it helps them for brand building also.But, if it is a small or medium level co. than I think direct marketing is the better option because in direct marketing you can directly approach to the customers and create awareness among people like what are your product or services.Because a customers can't buy your product untill they know it exists...

Whether to spend on direct advertising or PR campaign would entirely depend on the type of the target audience a company has & how they are influenced in making decisions.

But with the growth of social media, I feel PR campaigns using online platforms might be more effective than direct advertising. Today there are numerous options available in the market & most customers try to understand the differences by the online feedbacks. Also PR campaign through blogging, facebook, linkedin etc can send the information to millions of people in very short time with lesser cost.

To justify these two terms is very important, so I will say direct advertising is building your market Plus customers & Public relations is maintain that market plus customers.

In direct marketing, company tends to inform its target market about there product, through approaching them with sources like mails, msgs etc..
While in PR, company tends to involve those customers in some activities to maintain there position & loyalty, by remembering them about there company, where even branding plays a huge role.
More we might have observed such activities around us, like conducting some fest by companies like Surf Excel & have a challenge of washing clothes there.. its not building image, its a way of remembering those customers that "We are the Best.."

BUT Where should we spend, is a big question..!

So I will portray it as these both elements are inversely proportioned to each results of PR depends upon direct advertising. hence both are affected by each other, so are equally important. but still PR is more important & powerful tool

Well both direct advertising as well as PR is very important for organisation...Direct advertising is a way to promote your offering directly to customer wheres PR is reaching to customers indirectly. For Eg. If Fortis is giving ad in business magazine it is direct marketing and if Times of India is publishing an article on Medical tourism in India and giving example of Fortis it is PR.

PR is basically very essential for big brands wherein they need to have a social touch also with what they are offering.. Until and unless you are well renowned Brand PR activity is waste of money..For eg Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon...Airtel Formula One...etc. FOr small and medium business Direct advertising is best solution.

Marketing Manager need to have right mix of both activities to promote their brand.

The two terms direct advertising and PR are two different marketing activities still most of us are confused on both the terms because it seems one of the same thing.. Before we discuss what to choose and where we should spend, It is really important to understand the difference between the two:

Public relations : Public relations activities include helping the public to understand the company and its products through the media i.e. newspapers, television, magazines, events, conferences, press releases, etc.

Direct advertising : It is a marketing activity where companies approach to the customers or target audience directly through telemarketing, email marketing, direct mailers etc.

Now question comes where we should spend :

First of all both are equally important for an organisation, Still If you ask me I would say for a start up or new business direct advertising is more beneficial and before spending in PR they should spend in direct advertising because comparatively it is cheaper than PR and you can also track the responses and based on the same you can change the strategy.

PR is important for brand or big organisation because they have huge money to spend in their marketing, people already aware about the big brands their products/services hence instead of putting a telemarketing team companies focus on PR activities which increase their brand image.
